Mar. 31 – Writing chemical equations

Today we took on the task of writing chemical equations.  This is not easy and there are plenty of rules, but if you remember how to write chemical formulas from the name, you're already half way there!

This process is quite complicated, so take your time and keep practicing to get use to all the steps.

Mar. 28 – Types of Chemical Reactions

Today we finished up this handout from Tuesday:
Remember that in ionic compounds, the atoms gain or lose electrons.  In molecular compounds they share electrons.

Next, we talked about the signs that a chemical reaction has occurred.  Look at each of these and decide, was it a chemical reaction or not?

Cutting up a carrot?

A carrot rotting?

Boiling an egg until it is hard boiled.

Boiling water.

Lighting a campfire.

Explosives going off.

Baking a cake.

Water freezing.

Bending a paper clip.

Finally we looked at different types of chemical reactions.

Handouts
Here are the different types that you should know:

Synthesis

Decomposition

Single Displacement

Double Displacement

See the handouts for details, examples and practice problems.

Mar. 25 – Quiz and Bohr-Rutherford Diagrams

Congratulations on completing the Quiz today!

Here's the next topic: We used Bohr-Rutherford diagrams to show how elements joined together.

Handout
We went over the front side today on ionic compounds and will complete the other side tomorrow.

Mar. 21 – Naming Molecular Compounds

Today we went over the rules of how to name and write the formulas for molecular compounds.

Here are the notes.

Mar. 24 – Quiz Practice and Bohr-Rutherford Diagrams

Here's the practice for the quiz:

Handout

The quiz will be very similar to the first handout.

Next we practiced drawing Bohr-Rutherford diagrams.

Mar. 20 – Naming Ionic Compounds

Today we went over how to name and write down the formulas for ionic compounds.  Then we did a lot of practice on it.

Mar. 19 – Ionic Compounds

Today we looked more closely at ionic compounds.  We did an activity where we cut out shapes for positive and negative ions that fit together in certain ways.  By joining them together, you should be able to find out how many of each atom you needed to make an ionic compound.

Mar. 18 – Period Table Trends

Today we filled in this sign of all the safety symbols you need to know:

Handout:
Along with some videos such as compressed gas:

Biohazard:

Oxidizing:

Then we had a bunch of handouts on the periodic table:

And we watch this video made from real atoms!

We then worked on the Atoms make Compounds handout.

Homework
  • Complete the Medical Imaging Technology project!

Mar. 17 – Chemistry!

Welcome back from the break!   I handed back the tests today and went over the solutions.

Remember, if you have not completed the Medical Imaging Technology Assignment yet, it is now homework and DUE ON WEDNESDAY!

Now onto our new Unit:

Chemistry

Handouts

We start by talking about chemical reactions.  We came up with some ideas of chemical reactions such as baking soda and vinegar or diet coke and mentos.

Reactions can always be written in the form of an equation with the reactants on one side and products on the other.

Reactants --> Products
  • Reactants: the chemicals you mix together.
  • Products: the new chemicals created.

Here are two examples of chemical reactions that you already know about:

Photosynthesis
sunlight + carbon dioxide + water ---> glucose + oxygen

Cellular respiration
glucose + oxygen ---> energy + carbon dioxide + water

Here are some other crazy reactions:

Then we discussed some health and safety practices with chemicals.  many of you are already familiar with HHPS and WHMIS.

Mar. 5 – Medical Imaging Technologies

Congratulations on finishing the test yesterday!

Here's the next project:

Handout: Medical Imaging Technologies Research

You will each pick one technology on the list and research it.  Answer the provided questions and then put together a poster.  We have today and tomorrow as work periods for you to get started.

The project is due on March 19th.

Monday 3 March 2014

Mar. 3 – Practice Test

Today we did the practice test and went over the solutions.

Handout:
 Unit Test Practice

If you did well on the practice you will do well on the real test tomorrow.

Good luck in your studies!
